Sanda Communications wins 2005 Rosey Excellence Award for Boy Scouts annual report
Design recalls early 1960s merit badge books, creating a nostalgic connection with readers

PORTLAND, Ore. - November 7, 2005 - Sanda Communications won an Excellence award for its work on the Boy Scouts of America Cascade Pacific Council Annual Report at the 2005 Rosey Awards. The 48th annual advertising awards, sponsored by the Portland Advertising Federation, were presented November 3 at the Governor Hotel.

For the Cascade Pacific Council's 2004 Annual Report, Sanda wanted to bring back memories of when today's volunteers, leaders and donors were Scouts themselves. Sanda designer Debbie Pierce recreated the look of an early 1960s-era Boy Scouts merit badge book. Besides matching the layout and typography, Debbie also gave the report an aged look by incorporating dog-eared, faded pages and smudges from actual merit badge books into the production art.

"We tell our clients to judge an ad's effectiveness by results, so we seldom enter awards shows," said Scott McCannell, vice president and creative director. "Still, it's rewarding to see our work recognized by other professionals in our industry."

The Rosey Awards recognize outstanding local advertising and promotional materials. Awards are given for Merit and Excellence in 16 categories, including print, broadcast and interactive advertising, direct response, company literature and sales material. Judges for the 2005 awards were Michael Osborne of Michael Osborne Design in San Francisco; Joe Shands of TBWA/Chiat in Los Angeles; Stacy Milrany of Goodby Silverstien & Partners in San Francisco; and Jim Haven of Creature in Seattle.
