Description
CAD drafter/design technicians use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Working as part of a team, they create detailed technical drawings used to build everything from simple mechanical devices to complex aircraft, high-rise buildings and highways. CAD drafters combine strong drafting skills with a working knowledge of basic design principles and construction or manufacturing processes. With appropriate college degrees, they may go on to become engineering technicians, engineers or architects.
Working environment
In most cases, CAD drafters work in an office environment. Full-time drafters work a standard of 40 hours a week, but they may sometimes work overtime depending on the time of year and number of current projects. They typically work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., although there are opportunities for flexible hours and working from home. The job requires very limited travel, mostly in and around the local area.
Job duties
CAD drafters create detailed technical drawings using CAD software. As drafters gain experience, they usually progress to more complex designs.
